Carieville is a sandstone residence that was built in 1862 by Frederick and Caroline (‘Carie’) Robinson. It’s nestled in a peninsula suburb of Sydney’s Inner West, a stone’s throw from the city.
We were invited to Carieville 14 years after Geoffrey Britton’s original heritage garden plan was implemented. Our task was to refresh the place and to add another layer of planting, all with a deep regard for Geoffrey’s contribution.
Links to the past are everywhere at Carieville. It is not a museum piece or a dusty snapshot of the way people lived in times gone by. It’s very much alive with objects of this time – the ultimate exercise in adaptive reuse. It’s a joy to work in a garden with people who have such a strong regard for history and a sense of place.
